Don’t run, lean on God
What do you do when it looks like your dreams are not going to come true? This is the theme of chapter two of Pete Wilson’s book “Plan B: What Do You Do When God Doesn’t Show Up the Way You Thought He Would?”
In this chapter, Pete shares the story of David and his journey from shepherd boy to king. If you know the story, you know that there were a lot of ups and downs on this journey.
David’s story begins with the declaration from the prophet Samuel that he was going to be king. The problem was, he didn’t tell him when that was going to happen!
It was a long time in between the time that David was told he was going to be king and when he actually became king.
There were times when it seemed like everything was falling into place and then everything came crashing down.
There was a lot of time for David to doubt that his dream was going to come true.
During this time, David spent a lot of time needlessly running.
I think all of us can relate to David in some way.
We all have had our dreams not turn out the way we thought they would.
I will ask the question again: What do you do when it looks like your dreams are not going to come true?
The reality is that most us run like David did.
Sometimes the running involves anger.
Sometimes the running involves self-medicating ourselves.
The running takes many different shapes and forms but it is running nonetheless.
Instead of running though we need to turn to God and lean on Him. Listen to what Pete says:
“Your dreams may not be happening, and things aren’t turning out the way you expected, but that doesn’t mean your life is spinning out of control. It just means you’re not in control. It is in those moments you can learn to trust the only one who has ever had control in the first place.” (pg. 22) Pete Wilson “Plan B”
We need to remember that David’s dream did eventually come true. He did become king. It just took a while. He needed to persevere.
Persevering isn’t always easy. I know this from personal experience. It is infinitely easier to quit than to endure.
The challenge is to RESIST THE URGE!
We need to run to God instead of running away from Him.
We need to remember that no matter what God is still in control and He loves us!
What do you do when it looks like your dreams are not going to come true? Do you tend to run?
This is a continuation to our book club discussion of “Plan B”, by Pete Wilson. This week we’re in Chapter 2: Don’t run. If you have a response, please add it below and add to the discussion. Whether you’ve read the chapter or not, share your thoughts!

That quote of Pete’s is so powerful! I have it underlined and starred.
It’s hard to remember that if a dream is truly planted by God it *will* come true in *His* time. I tend to doubt it was God’s dream to begin with. That’s the time to focus on Him and not the dream.
It is definitely a powerful quote!
I have it all marked up in my copy of Plan B too!
Thanks for sharing Sandra!
I tend to go over the top with self-medication and running when my dreams crash down. Honestly, broken dreams are about all I know. But lately I’ve been working to practice what Pete preaches and hang on when it looks like everything’s going sideways. And boy, do they go sideways.
I can definitely relate to the self-medicating. This is something that I have struggled with for years. I am slowly learning to leave it in God’s hands (easier said than done at times though!)
Continue to persevere Jason!

I know this feeling very well, and I haven’t even had someone after me trying to kill me like David did. The running gets so tiring and sometimes you don’t even realize it’s happening until you’re doing it again. I keep learning and I keep leaning… Thanks Kevin.
Yes, we need to keep on leaning, keep on leaning …
Thanks for sharing Jason!
But, I like control!!…However, I don’t like running…so, where does that leave me?
Leaning on the everlasting arms big time…that’s where! Great encouragement bro…thanks!
Amen Jay!

I may not have read the book but I am definitely intrigued now. It is so true that in rough times we tend to run away. We need to always make a place for God in our lives daily. That daily armor polish makes it so much easier to run to god and not away.
I would greatly encourage you to read this book Gerald! It has been very good for me so far.
Thanks for sharing!
