God is good

God is good

I believe very strongly that our perception of God will radically affect the way we think and act! If we have a poor and distorted view of God – it will affect us negatively and conversely if we have a good and proper view of God it will affect us positively.  We need to have a proper view of God! Even though we cannot see or touch God we can learn about Him though His attributes. God’s attributes are some of the things that make up His character and they are things that we would use to describe our Great God.

God is Good

One attribute that describes God is good.  In our house we pray this simple prayer before every meal: “God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our food. Amen.”  Very simple but very profound! I think that God’s goodness is something that we all take for granted way too often. I know it is too easy for me. I mean, how often do we take time to appreciate God’s goodness?

I love what Max Lucado has to say about this. He says:

“I wake up in a world of miracles every morning. Every time I breathe and use the oxygen and incorporate it into my body it is a miracle. Every time I open my eyes and see the beauty that surrounds me, that’s a miracle. Every time I touch the hand of a baby, that’s a miracle. Every time I take a morsel of food and put it into my mouth and chew it, and my body digests it and uses the energy from it, that’s a miracle. Just as surely as it was a miracle when God opened the waters of the Red Sea, just as surely as it was a miracle when Jesus fed the multitudes, just as surely as it was a miracle when Jesus healed the blind man, we wake up in a world of miracles every day. And some of us have the audacity to want more.

That last phrase hurts a lot: “some of us have the audacity to want more.”  Ouch! I know that I fall into this category way too often. It is so easy for me at times to live with a sense of entitlement – like I “deserve” all the blessings that God gives to me. The reality is that I don’t deserve any of the blessings that God gives me but He still blesses me because He is a good God!  We need to take time daily to appreciate the goodness of God!

God has to be good

God has to be good … it’s His very nature to be good. Because God is good: we receive pardon and forgiveness for our sins. Because God is good: He hears our prayers. Because God is good: We can experience fellowship with Him. Because God is good: we can trust in Him knowing that whatever happens in our life is based on His goodness.

Of course, there are times when we don’t see the goodness of God … especially when something bad happens to us. When we experience a heartache, a tragedy, a disappointment it seems like God isn’t good. Otherwise, why would God allow this to happen to us?  I know in my own life I have asked the question: If God is good, then why all the suffering, not only in the world, but in my life? This is a tough question to answer.

Everything that God does is good!

We have to remember that everything that God does is good! When God created the world, He stopped and said “It is good.” Part of our problem is that we spend too much of our time complaining about the ten bad things and not enough time rejoicing over the thousand good things. Yes, there is suffering in our lives.  Yes, I have had heartaches and tragedies and disappointments in my life but my good God was there to see me through every one of them. This is what we need to focus on!

God is good

Over the next three posts I want to look closer at the goodness of God by examining three things:

1.  God sets the standard for goodness.
2.  God can turn badness into goodness.
3.  How can we make God’s goodness real in our life?

Make sure to come back and check out them out!
