Is God’s grace really sufficient?

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a

I have read this verse more times than I can remember, memorized it and have even preached on it but to be completely honest, sometimes I doubt it.

Sometimes I doubt that God’s grace is sufficient when I am struggling with depression.

Sometimes I doubt that God’s grace is sufficient when I am feeling overwhelmed.

Sometime I doubt that God’s grace is sufficient when it comes to making tough decisions at the church that I get the privilege to be the pastor of.

Sometimes I doubt that God’s grace is sufficient when I’ve allowed myself to walk down a familiar path of sin and I feel like a complete loser.

Is God’s grace really sufficient?

Can’s God’s grace really carry me (and others) through these areas that I mentioned above?

Or, is this just some pie-in-the-sky truth that has no earthly value?

Or, is it only true for the super-saints like the Apostle Paul or Peter?

Is God’s grace really sufficient?

Today I found myself wrestling with these questions (once again).

As I was wrestling with my thoughts around these questions this song by Ryan Wilkins came to mind, “Lay Down My Arms“.  I first heard this song four years ago and it had a profound impact on me then but I hadn’t listened to it recently.

As I was listening to it today, it spoke so clearly to me! Unfortunately, I am unable to find the words for the song but these lines (and many others) spoke powerfully to me:

I feel … the time has come for me to let it go .. to You.
But I need .. the strength of ten thousand men or more … or just Yours.

I need to be continually reminded that I need to give everything over to God (easy to say but very difficult to do at times!)

Some days it does feel like I need the strength of ten thousand men or more to live the victorious life that God wants me to live but I have to be continually reminded that all I need is God’s strength!

Yes, God’s grace is sufficient (even when I doubt it at times) because His power is made perfect in my weakness! When I am weak then He is strong!

Do you ever doubt that God’s grace is sufficient for you? What has helped you be reminded of the fact that God’s strength is indeed sufficient?

  1. His grace IS sufficient…what is lacking is my ability to rest in His grace when things are difficult. Every day that I spend in His grace, it becomes easier though.

  2. We are supposed to have Faith in his Grace..It is so tough when it feels like you are climbing uphill in so many areas of your life. Thank you for reminding me and for sharing this verse!!

  3. Hi Kevin! God’s Grace is His way of favor mercy to forgive a person’s sins, and to accept that repentant person as one of his created son’s by granting him His Holy Spirit and salvation! To receive God’s Grace is very powerful because as we all know God can give or do anything for us.

  4. Hi Kev’s.. I agree with Mika, god can forgive our every sin’s because we are just only human he can forgive us..

  5. While I know and believe God’s grace is sufficient because I have witness what He’s done for me and seen Him work in other people’s lives too; when we are in those moments of weakness, we can easily forget that and doubt just how powerful and graceful God is. I have suffered with depression to the point where I didn’t want to be here anymore. I didn’t think God was listening. But He was all the time. When I admitted that I needed help, guess what? He led me to the right places. He let me cry and be honest with myself without worrying about judgement. It’s a beautiful thing. Even when I do sin, I know His grace is sufficient. Honestly, it’s sufficient enough for me not to purposely sin. It’s the choice that I make. His word is true!

  6. This was a timely post for me, because I could relate to so much of what you said: it’s hard to appropriate that grace sometimes when circumstances get us down. But His Grace is always there: I just have to take up the cup and drink.
