Living the Great Adventure . . .

October 8, 2008 — 3 Comments

This song has been one of my favourite songs since it came out in 1992 (I can’t believe it has been 16 years!) I love the message of this song. The Christian life is the greatest adventure ever – especially when we follow God into the “glorious unknown”! This is how I am feeling right now. I am SO excited about what God is doing in and around me. As a church, we are stepping into some new territory (for us anyway) as we continue to make connections into our community. We are beginning to see the fruit of this. Over the last several months we have seen more guests than we have in a long time. It has forced me (and I hope others) to think about how we are relating to those who don’t have a relationship with Christ yet. Each week as I look around and I see new faces I am asking questions like: What are they thinking about this “experience”? How is this meeting their needs? Are they feeling comfortable/welcomed? Does ANY of what we do make sense to them? If not, why?

I am also excited as God continues to grow me as I step out “into the glorious unknown” with Him. The biggest area that I am being challenged to grow in right now is my preaching. About 4 or so months ago, I began to totally change my preaching style. I had been preaching the same way for 12 years and I knew that I needed a change. I read Andy Stanley’s book “Communicating for a Change” and I began to implement his one point preaching method. I love it! It has been a LOT of hard work making the adjustment but I feel that I am connecting more with people through my messages than I have ever before. God continues to stretch me as a leader as well. He is challenging me to step out of my comfort zone in areas that are VERY difficult for me. I am living the GREAT ADVENTURE right now! I am on the “ride” of my life! I am excited to “discover all the new horizons just waiting to be explored.” I am living the life that I was created for!

How about you? Are you living the “great adventure”? Why or why not?

  1. Everything sounds just wonderful at your church right now. I am excited about your excitement!!
We had a meeting last night to discuss how to connect people to our church. Most newcomers come because they have checked out our website and listened to the Pastor’s message. The number one priority for choosing a certain church is the preaching. The reason they decide to stay is because they are made to feel welcome and wanted at the church. I wanted to encourage you to continue doing what you are as it seems to be working.

  2. Great Blog and post.

I went to Stephen Curtis Chapman’s concert when this song came out! He was with the Newsboys.

Anyway I know it’s off topic but there it is.

Just saw him at faith day. Very moving and a his life is an awesome testimony to Jesus especially with where his “Great Adventure” has taken him in recent months.

  3. Thanks Nathan!

I remember that tour as well. :) SCC and Newsboys came to Vancouver, BC. I wasn’t able to go though. :(

SCC’s life is a GREAT testimony of living the “Great Adventure.”
