Love & Respect

September 14, 2007 — 2 Comments

This past Sunday, Lauren and I began reading together the book Love & Respect by Emerson Eggerichs. We have been trying to read a chapter together each night and then discuss it. Here is the premise of the book:

A wife has one driving need – to feel loved. When that need is met, she is happy. A husband has one driving need – to feel respected. When that need is met, he is happy.

When either either of those needs isn’t met, things get crazy. Love and Respect reveals why spouses react negatively to each other, and how they can deal with such conflict quickly, easily and biblically.

So far, we are finding the book to be a good discussion starter. Tonight, Lauren asked me when I feel the most respected. That was a tough question for me to answer. I have never really given that question much thought before. The only response I could come up with was when she respects my work at the church – in the sense of not putting any extra pressure on me to come home early or to make me feel guilty when I have to be away at times. I am not sure why that was my first response. I know that I will be spending more time thinking about this and discussing this with Lauren as we continue to read the book.

Here are two questions for you to talk about with your spouse: Wives – when do you feel the most loved? Husbands, when do you feel the most respected? I would love to hear how the discussion goes!

  1. That is a great question your wife asked. Have you finished the book? What did you think?

  2. Hey Mark! We have not finished the book yet (we are trying to just read a chapter a night and then discuss it). At this pace, we should be done by the end of October :-0
