Sadly this is how many people understand the fear of God. As a result they view God as a cosmic cop who is just waiting to whack them over the head with his billy club when they do something wrong. I lived with this false view of the fear of God for many years.
The fear of God is something far greater and more powerful than that.
It’s the reality that the God who spoke and hung the stars in the heaven and created planets that we have never even discovered, who created the atoms and all the things we don’t see. The God who made all of that cares for you and loves you. WOW!
It’s the reality that the God who was powerful enough to cause a world-wide flood and kill everything but was compassionate enough and full of justice enough that He saved Noah and his family in a floating ark. That’s the God who loves you. WOW!
It’s the reality that the God who split the sea as He rescued the Israelites from slavery and they walked through on dry land and when they got to the other side the other army came and God had the waters fold over top of them and took out their whole army. That God, that powerful God, that is who we get to talk to when we are praying – that’s who loves you. WOW!
It’s the reality that the God who was so great that He gave His one and only Son to die in our place, the Good News of the One who was perfect who died for us, who was sinless but took the sins of the sinful, that’s the God who loves you. WOW!
The more we get to know God the more this sense of WOW increases.
The more we get to know God’s character, His power, His nature, His goodness, His glory and His transcendence and the closer we get to Him the more in awe of Him we are.
Over the next two posts I want to share two things that will happen when we our fear/our awe of God increases:
What is your understanding of the fear of God?
